WhatsApp down for over an hour now, users unable to send/receive texts

Image
In what came to be an unusual incident for several WhatsApp users, the social messaging platform seems to have gone down for thousands of people in India and in some other countries. A bit after noon, WhatsApp started showing signs of disruptions as many were not able to see double checks in their texts. Following this, users also started reporting issues with WhatsApp on both their mobile phones and the web as they were unable to send or receive messages or any media files. Apart from that, users are also reporting issues with loading the webpage of WhatsApp. According to Downdetector, an outage tracking website, people started facing issues with WhatsApp mobile app and web at around 12:30 PM on Tuesday, 25 October. Besides, the website also pointed out the percentage of users encountering different issues on the platform. Also, in a statement issued by Meta to the media, it has been said, “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re workin

WhatsApp goes down in a number of areas around the globe, users can’t access group chats or WhatsApp Web

Image
WhatsApp, the Meta-owned instant messaging service has apparently suffered a major disruption with most of its services having being rendered inaccessible to its users.  Apparently, WhatsApp’s services such as Group Chats and WhatsApp Web have been hit worldwide, whereas regular chats have been hit only in certain portions of the world, including India. As of now, there is no clear reason as to why certain selective services of WhatsApp would be out of order, and not the entire platform. However, people have been speculating, that this may be because of the increased exchange of messages and media because of Diwali, or the outage may be due to the partial solar eclipse that is supposed to take place today. Both of these speculations, however, should be taken with a massive grain of salt. WhatsApp has more than enough bandwidth to withstand sudden spikes in traffic. And in any case had either of the reasons, the overload of messages of the solar eclipse being a reason, been true, th

Explained: What is Clean Energy Charging that Apple has enabled on their latest iPhones

Image
Apple has enabled one of the most promising charging features on its latest iPhones and certain older models of the iPhone, if they have updated to the most recent version of iOS, i.e. iOS 16.1. Called Clean Energy Charging, the new system, ideally, should be the next big thing in charging technology. Over the last couple of years, battery charging technology, especially in smartphones has gone insane. We moved from 33W fast charging as the industry to 45W-60W in no time. We even have cell phones that go upto 150W of fast charging. While having a quick chrarging time is good, in the pursuit of speed, tech companies have completely ignored efficiency and just how wasteful certain charging methodologies can be. What is Apple’s Clean Energy Charging? Apple’s Clean Energy Charging feature aims to “reduce a user’s carbon footprint” by charging when lower carbon-emission electricity is available. Basically, what the new feature does, is that when it is enabled on an iPhone, the device ge

Google will officially stop supporting Chrome for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 from next year

Image
For most PC enthusiasts, Windows 7 was one of the best operating systems that Microsoft has released in decades. While Microsoft pulled the plug on the operating system about two years, ago, one of the biggest support systems it had up until now, has decided that it will no longer support Windows 7. Google has officially announced that it will stop updating its Chrome browser for Windows 7, starting 2023. Just to give you an idea of how popular and well-received theWindows 7 operating system was, consider this – despite the fact that it was first released in 2009 and Microsoft officially ended supporting it in 2020, there are at least 100 million active devices that use Windows 7, and connect to the internet, daily. As opposed to that, the next Windows OS, Windows 8.1, does not have even half of those numbers. This does not include the number of air-gapped devices, or devices that are running on a pirated copy of Windows 7. From a security standpoint, this is a huge deal. Google, p

A new lease of life: Swedish ML engineer develops AI tool to colourise black-and-white photos automatically

Image
Black and white photos have a retro charm that most colour photographs lack. Having said that, there are tons of iconic photographs that were taken originally in black and white, which, has often made us wonder how they would look, had they been shot in colour. A Swedish machine learning researcher and developer called Emil Wallner has released a free web tool called ‘Palette.fm’ that automatically colourises black-and-white photos using machine learning and Artificial Intelligence. All you need to do is upload a digital copy of the black-and-white image that they want to convert, and get the image converted. After you upload an image, the site’s sleek interface provides an estimated caption or a description of what it thinks it sees in the picture. If you don’t like any of the preset colour filters, you can click the pencil icon to edit the caption yourself, which guides the colourisation model using a text prompt. To test this out, we used one of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s mos

Explained: How the US Govt. may kill Elon Musk’s Twitter deal, and why Musk may be secretly hoping for it

Image
After going through all the drama between Elon Musk and his team, and Twitter, it turns out that it may be the US government who has the final say in the Elon Musk-Twitter deal. After going back and forth a number of times over his proposal to buy Twitter for $44 billion, Elon Musk finally committed to his plan and stated that he will indeed buy Twitter for the agreed-upon amount. The issue is, that Musk, at least according to several trade analysts is overpaying for Twitter if he buys the company for the agreed-upon $44 billion mark.  Superficially, Musk has maintained that if he buys Twitter, it would be hugely beneficial for his goal of launching a super app or his own social media platform, called X.com . However, Musk has also indicated very subtly that he does not want to buy Twitter, not for the price of $44 billion at least. If Musk is forced to go through with the deal, he will be paying much more than what Twitter is worth as of writing this article. That is also being to

Muhammed Shiyad Chathoth, a 17-year-old class 12 Computer Science student from Kerala has invented a working robot to help his struggling mother around the house, with some household chores.  Chathoth first got the idea when he along with his family were at a restaurant in Kannur and saw that they were being served by a basic humanoid robot. He was 14 back then and heard his mother exclaim if only she had a robot like that who could help her out with her work around the house. Chathoth has always been a tech enthusiast and has been very handy with automation. In an interview, Chathoth claims that he had developed a mobile application to control lights, fans and every other electrical device in the house. Therefore, he was confident about this robot project too. To start of with his own Robot, which they have named Android Pathooty, after a Malayalam film named Android Kunjappan , Chathoth asked the restaurant about the machine at the same restaurant and was told that it cost Rs 3-

Elon Musk or Enola Musk? Someone used AI to generate gender-swapped images of celebs, and they are hilarious

Image
Artificial Intelligence based image generators can be great fun if you have some quirky ideas, and the patience to get them executed. Not only can you generate some really quirky and aesthetic-looking pieces of art, but you can also come up with stuff that is bound to get you some major points on the internet. A Reddit user recently used an artificial intelligence-based image generator to gender-swap some famous celebrities. The resulting photos have become a massive hit online, quite instantly. While some of the images that were generated looked a bit off, most of these celebrities resemble the opposite gender, almost as if they were born that way, or we were looking at pictures of their twins, but of the opposite sex. Elon Musk, for example, looks incredible in the photo. The AI program has put some form of a reverse ageing filter and gotten rid of the finer lines and some of the wrinkles. And of course, it gave Musk long locks of hair. In Jennifer Anniston’s case, the program d

The iPhone 14 Plus is such a huge flop, that Apple has decided to stop its production

Image
Apple launched the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus early in September this year . After barely a month, Apple has decided that it will start phasing out the production of the iPhone 14 Plus, and then stop it completely. Tech analysts and Apple fans had expected that the iPhone 14 Plus wouldn’t perform to the level that Apple was expecting it to. Historically, devices that were of an odd size, and weren’t true flagship device from Apple, has failed to garner good sales. This was especially true for the iPhone 13 Mini. Similarly, the iPhone 14 Plus, which was dubbed as the iPhone 14 Max by the tech community before it was launched, has gone the same way.  In case of the iPhone 13 Mini, the issue was the diminutive size of the device. When it comes to iPhones, people prefer a regular-sized device and not a smaller and seemingly cheaper version, since most iPhone users, purchase the device for clout.  In iPhone 14 Max’s situation, the issue was the price of the device. It seems that

Apple will release a foldable iPad worth $2,300-2,500, by 2024, before they launch a foldable iPhone

Image
Tech enthusiasts and fans of Apple have been waiting for the tech company to finally enter the foldable devices market and launch the foldable iPhone. Apple, on the other hand, wants to get the foldable iPhone just right and hence is taking its time to make one. Now, certain reports claim that we might actually get a foldable iPad before we get the foldable iPhone. As per marketing research firm CCS Insight’s annual predictions report, Apple would be keen to avoid any technical issues with a folding phone and instead prefer to dip its toes into the foldable market through a tablet. The main reason behind this could be the fact that a folding iPhone would be risky for Apple as it may downgrade the sales of the conventional iPhone, one of Apple’s most profitable devices. There are reports that Apple is in talks with LG to develop an ultra-thin cover glass for its entire range of foldable devices. Rumours from reputable Apple tipsters have suggested that in 2024, Apple will launch a
