Sex in space: Could technology help in meeting astronauts' intimate needs during space travel?

Image
The 2018 movie A.I. Rising explores how machines could fulfil desires and support humans during space travel. Lo and behold, it might contain the solution to problems related to space exploration. Astronauts, despite their rigorous training, remain humans with needs. For space exploration and colonization to succeed, we need to overcome taboos, consider human needs and desires and provide concrete, realistic solutions based on science rather than conventional morality. Can humans thrive for prolonged periods of time in small groups and in closed, isolated environments? Can humans contend with limited possibilities of relationships, intimacy and sexuality? Sex tech might have the answer. As researchers exploring human-machine erotic interactions, we are interested in their implications and potential applications for human well-being — even beyond our home planet. Sex in space Space exploration and colonization is one of humanity’s greatest endeavours, but it comes with challenges

Astronomers discover existence of a minimoon three years after Earth captures it

Image
The moon has been a muse for writers, singers, poets, historians and scientists alike. It now seems that it will have to, for a temporary period, share its attention with a newly discovered minimoon. A minimoon, according to Live Science , is a temporarily captured object, like a space rock, that got caught in Earth's orbit for several months or years before shooting off into the distant solar system again (or burning up in our planet's atmosphere). Researchers from the Catalina Sky Survey at the University of Arizona have found 2020 CD3, a small, rare celestial object that has gotten caught in earth’s orbit and is circling our planet. Making it the earth’s natural satellite and thus, our second moon. We can’t wait for some singer to make a rhyme for this little guy. It is around 1.9-3.5 metres in diameter and has the surface brightness of a typical carbon-rich asteroid. Amateur astrophysicist Tony Dunn tweeted out that this minimoon has been orbiting earth from the past th

Pre-approved antiviral drugs could be first line of defense for COVID-19 infection

Image
Already approved broad-spectrum antiviral drugs may offer a first-line treatment for the novel coronavirus which has so far killed over 2,700 people and infected around 80,000, according to a study unveiled on Thursday. Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) noted that there is no vaccine or cure for the virus insight. This means that doctors can do little more than offer supportive treatment to the very sick, and hope their bodies can survive the infection, they said. According to the study, published as a pre-proof in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, already approved drugs might hold the key to treating the new virus. "Drug repurposing is a strategy for generating additional value from an existing drug by targeting diseases other than that for which it was originally intended," said Denis Kainov, an associate professor at NTNU. "For example, teicoplanin, oritavancin, dalbavancin and monensin are approved antibi

John Tenniel, the illustrator for 'Alice in Wonderland', celebrated in today's Google doodle

The man best remembered for bringing to life the characters of Lewis Carroll’s timeless “ Alice in Wonderland ” series, would have been 200 years today. John Tenniel is one of the most highly-regarded Victorian illustrators and painters. He was born on this day in 1820 in London. From a young age, he taught himself to illustrate and at the age of 16, he submitted his first work, an oil painting, for exhibition at the Society of British Artists. In 1850, Tenniel became a political cartoonist with the historic weekly magazine Punch . Tenniel had a distinctive style, due in part to his near-photographic memory. Google writes in its blog, "It was this unique approach that most likely caught the attention of writer and professor Charles Dodgson, whose pen name was Lewis Carroll. After an introduction in 1864, Tenniel agreed to illustrate Carroll’s new book, “ Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ,” released the following year." Post that, Tenniel also illustrated for “ Through th

Indian women scientists stress on pay gaps, equality, fair policies in research

Image
As the country marks the National Science Day on Friday, many leading Indian women scientists have stressed on the need for the right kind of support, equality, and gender-fair policies in the field of research. National Science Day is celebrated on 28 February each year commemorating Indian physicist C V Raman's discovery in 1928 of the Raman effect — the scattering of photons or light particles by matter. Raman received a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. Of the 607 Nobel medals awarded so far in scientific disciplines globally, just 20 have gone to women. Noting that a career in science is a demanding and tough option, Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice-Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida said there are additional barriers — often unintentional and unconscious ones — which are put up along the career path of women in science. "When such a career demands long hours, there are issues of lack of security and basic amenities that affect women more adversely than men in thi

Black hole explosion, 390 mn light years away, carves out crater from surrounding hot gas

Image
Astronomers have discovered the biggest explosion seen in the universe, originating from a supermassive black hole. Scientists reported Thursday that the blast came from a black hole in a cluster of galaxies 390 million light-years away. The explosion was so large it carved out a crater in the hot gas that could hold 15 Milky Ways, said lead author Simona Giacintucci of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington. It’s five times bigger than the previous record-holder. Astronomers used NASA’s  Chandra X-Ray Observatory  to make the discovery, along with a European space observatory and ground telescopes. They believe the explosion came from the heart of the Ophiuchus cluster of thousands of galaxies: a large galaxy at the center contains a colossal black hole. Black holes don’t just draw matter in. They also blast out jets of material and energy. The first hint of this giant explosion actually came in 2016. Chandra images of the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster revealed an unusual curved
