Apple iPhone SE, OnePlus 9R to iQOO 7 5G: Best phones under Rs 40,000 (June 2021)

Image
Smartphones available for under Rs 40,000 in India tend to improve with every passing quarter. While a couple of handsets have retained their spots on this list, some of the new entrants come loaded to their teeth. If you thought Snapdragon 865 was par for the course in this budget, we have a couple of handsets with the Snapdragon 888 this time. Beyond that, one can expect high refresh rate AMOLED screens, 108MP cameras, 5G compliance and more. Let’s see what you can get your hands on for under Rs 40,000 in June 2021. Best phones to buy under Rs 40,000 in India OnePlus 9R / 8T Call it 8T or 9R; both OnePlus handsets are almost identical, barring a couple of minor differences. The OnePlus 9R was launched in India at Rs 39,999, when the 8T was selling for a few thousand rupees more. Sensibly, the price of the OnePlus 8T (review) has now been lowered to a little below that of the 9R. You get their 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage variants in this budget. Both phones have a 6.55-inch Full H

New Kia Sportage exterior design to be revealed on 8 June, world premiere in July

Image
Teaser images of the 2022 Kia Sportage have been revealed ahead of the full exterior design reveal on 8 June. Sharing its underpinnings with the new-gen Hyundai Tucson, the fifth-generation Kia Sportage is expected to ditch the gawky, quirky appearance of its predecessor for a bolder, more rounded design language overall, hints of which are visible in the teaser images Kia has shared. It has also been confirmed that the new Kia Sportage will make its full world premiere in July this year. What stands out in the teaser images of the new Sportage are its boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, placed alongside the separate headlight clusters, with a split ‘Tiger Nose’ grille lending a hint of aggression to the nose. Wing mirrors are mounted on the front doors; the blacked-out B, C and D pillars provide a ‘floating roof’ effect, the window line and roof line taper off towards the rear, and the LED tail-lights appear to be linked by a slim light bar, an arrangement reminiscent of th

Chinese cargo spacecraft successfully docks with core space station module

Image
A Chinese cargo spacecraft carrying equipment and supplies successfully docked with the core module of the country's future space station on Sunday, state media said. A Long March 7 rocket carrying the Tianzhou-2 cargo craft -- loaded with essentials such as food, equipment and fuel -- blasted off late Saturday from the Wenchang launch site on the tropical southern island of Hainan, the Xinhua news agency reported. The docking with the space station's Tianhe core module was completed at 5:01 am Beijing time (2101 GMT Saturday), the agency said, citing the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA). China will need to carry out around 10 missions in total to complete assembly of the space station -- named Tiangong, meaning "heavenly palace" -- in orbit. The station is expected to become fully operational in 2022. Once completed, it is expected to remain in low Earth orbit for up to 15 years. With the possible retirement of the International Space Station after 2028, Tiangong

Climate change causes more than 100,000 heat-related deaths per year, finds study

Image
More than a third of summer heat-related fatalities are due to climate change, researchers said Monday, warning of even higher death tolls as global temperatures climb. Previous research on how climate change affects human health has mostly projected future risks from heatwaves, droughts, wild fires and other extreme events made worse by global warming. How much worse depends on how quickly humanity curbs carbon emissions, which hit record levels in 2019 but dipped sharply during the pandemic. But a new study by an international team of 70 experts is one of the first -- and the largest -- to look at health consequences that have already happened, the authors said. The findings, published in Nature Climate Change , were stark: data from 732 locations in 43 countries spread across every inhabited continent revealed that, on average, 37 percent of all heat-related deaths can be attributed directly to global warming. "Climate change is not something in the distant future," se

US, EU representatives urge countries to take a greener stand during South Korea's virtual climate summit

Image
Top US and EU representatives on Monday urged other countries to do more in the global initiative towards a greener planet, stressing the world "cannot afford to wait" at a virtual summit hosted by South Korea. Climate change is a major threat to global growth, with perils ranging from disease outbreaks and declines in crop yields. But international negotiations on how to tackle it have long been hampered by disagreements over burden-sharing between rich countries that bear far more historical responsibility for climate change and the rising giants that are now among the world's biggest polluters. Last month, US President Joe Biden announced that the world's largest economy would cut emissions blamed for climate change by 50 to 52 percent by 2030 compared with 2005 levels, doubling the country's previous commitments. The US' special climate envoy John Kerry told the P4G climate conference hosted by South Korea: "We are pressing other countries to step

Seeds of nearly 5,000 plants stocked in South Korea's mountains as plant extinction threatens food security

Image
Hidden in a South Korean mountain tunnel designed to withstand a nuclear blast, the seeds of nearly 5,000 wild plant species are stored for safekeeping against climate change, natural disaster and war. Plant extinction is progressing at an alarming rate, researchers warn, driven by increasing human population, pollution and deforestation, even before many species are catalogued. The Baekdudaegan National Arboretum Seed Vault Centre preserves nearly 100,000 seeds from 4,751 different wild plant species to ensure they are not lost to "apocalyptic events", says its head Lee Sang-yong. It is one of only two such facilities in the world, he told AFP : unlike more commonplace seed banks, where samples are stored and regularly withdrawn for various purposes, deposits in seed vaults are meant to be permanent, with use intended only as a last resort to prevent extinction. The vault is designated as a security installation by South Korea's National Intelligence Service, surround

Iceland lost 750 sq km of glaciers over the last two decades due to global warming

Image
Iceland's glaciers have lost around 750 square kilometres (290 square miles), or seven percent of their surface, since the turn of the millennium due to global warming, a study published on Monday showed. The glaciers, which cover more than 10 percent of the country's land mass, shrank in 2019 to 10,400 square kilometres, the study in the Icelandic scientific journal Jokull said. Since 1890, the land covered by glaciers has decreased by almost 2,200 square kilometres or 18 percent. But almost a third of this decline has occurred since 2000, according to the recent calculations by glaciologists, geologists and geophysicists. Experts have previously warned that Iceland's glaciers are at risk of disappearing entirely by 2200. The ice's retreat over the past two decades is almost equivalent to the total surface area of Hofsjokull, Iceland's third-biggest ice cap at 810 square kilometres. "Glacier-area variations in Iceland since around 1890 show a clear respo

Skeptics in Russia don't fully trust Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine, refuse to get vaccinated

Image
Like many Moscow residents, Davlatmo Khadamshoyeva has her doubts about coronavirus vaccines developed in Russia, and is in no hurry to be immunised. "I haven't got the jab yet. I don't really trust it," the 23-year-old, not wearing a mask, told AFP outside an iconic shopping centre on Red Square. "The vaccine hasn't been fully tested yet," the international relations student said. Russia — with great fanfare — registered the world's first coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V in August 2020. Named after the world's first satellite launched by the USSR in 1957, Sputnik has been touted by President Vladimir Putin as "the world's best" jab, while leading independent medical journal, The Lancet, deemed it effective in a study published in February. In addition to Sputnik, Russian scientists have also developed two more vaccines. Still, authorities in Moscow and other cities are facing an uphill battle to win over skeptics like Khadamshoyev

Russian Soyuz, Arianespace launch OneWeb's 36 telecom satellites to LEO

No end in sight: Sri Lanka faces its worst marine crisis as plastic from burning ship washes ashore

Image
Sri Lanka faces an unprecedented pollution crisis as waves of plastic waste from a burning container ship hit the coast and threaten to devastate the local environment, a top environment official warned Saturday. Thousands of navy ratings using mechanical diggers scooped tonnes of tiny plastic granules on the beaches that had come from the Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl that has been smouldering on the horizon for ten days. Sri Lanka's Marine Protection Authority (MEPA) said the microplastic pollution could cause years of ecological damage to the Indian Ocean island. "This is probably the worst beach pollution in our history," MEPA chairman Dharshani Lahandapura said. The tiny polyethylene pellets threaten tourism beaches and fish-breeding in shallow waters. Fishing has been banned along an 80-kilometre stretch of coast near the ship that has been burning for 10 days despite an international firefighting operation. "There is smoke and intermittent flames

At its annual investor meet, Mahindra and Mahindra has laid out a plan to upgrade and widen its range of offerings significantly over the next five years. The company plans to invest Rs 9,000 crore towards this, of which an initial Rs 3,000 crore has already been spent with the company's recent expansion of facilities and products. The first of these nine new models is the new Thar, already launched in 2020. The Gen 3 body-on-frame platform it debuted will spawn three more models. The new Mahindra Scorpio will come first, originally scheduled to launch this year but postponed to early next year due to the current disruptions. This will be followed by the five-door iteration of the Mahindra Thar, expected between 2023 and 2026. This is the first official confirmation of the bigger version of the second-gen Thar, which should make it even more attractive to buyers who want the practicality of the full second row. 'Threat to life itself': Doctors4XR march to WHO demanding global action against health risks posed by climate change

Hundreds of health workers marched to the World Health Organization on Saturday demanding that authorities in all countries recognise and act to counter the health risks of climate change. Around two hundred people wearing white medical coats and facemasks marched or were pushed in wheelchairs two kilometres (1.2 miles) through Geneva's international district to the WHO headquarters. Some carried giant banners urging action, including a towering thermometer showing the red temperature scale rising towards a burning planet. Once at the WHO building, representatives of the Doctors for Extinction Rebellion (Doctors4XR) climate activist network handed over a petition to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Signed by more than 1,100 health professionals from around the world, the text slammed the "inertia, inaction and the abyssal distance between speeches and actions". It demanded that health authorities in every country, who are currently taking part virtually in the ma

Pfizer vaccine protects against COVID-19 strain predominant in India but is slightly less effective, finds study

The Pfizer vaccine is slightly less effective but appears to still protect against the more transmissible Indian strain of the virus that causes Covid-19, according to a study by France's Pasteur Institute. "Despite slightly diminished efficacy, the Pfizer vaccine probably protects" against the Indian variant, according to laboratory test results, said Olivier Schwartz, the institute's director and co-author of the study that was published on the BioRxiv website ahead of peer review. The study sampled 28 healthcare workers in the city of Orleans. Sixteen of them had received two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, while 12 had received one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine. People who had received two doses of Pfizer saw a three-fold reduction in their antibodies against the Indian variant, B.1.617, according to the study, but were still protected. "The situation was different with the AstraZeneca vaccine, which induced particularly low levels of antibodies neutralisi
