Astronomers see black hole swallowing neutron star for the first time

Image
Talk about a heavy snack. For the first time, astronomers have witnessed a black hole swallowing a neutron star, the most dense object in the universe — all in a split-second gulp. Ten days later they saw the same thing, on the other side of the universe. In both cases, a neutron star — a teaspoon of which would weigh a billion tons — orbits ever closer to that ultimate point of no return, a black hole, until they finally crash together and the neutron star is gone in a gobble. Astronomers witnessed the last 500 orbits before the neutron stars were swallowed, a process that took far less than a minute and briefly generated as much energy as all the visible light in the observable universe. “It was just a big quick (gulp), gone,” said study co-author Patrick Brady, an astrophysicist at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. The black hole “gets a nice dinner of a neutron star and makes itself just a little bit more massive.” The bursts of energy from the collisions were discovered ...

ISRO struggles with Gaganyaan's uncrewed flights deadline as lockdown disrupts its schedule

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is racing against time to launch the first uncrewed mission in December, as part of the human spaceflight programme ‘Gaganyaan’, due to the adverse impact of the COVID-19-induced lockdowns that has disrupted hardware delivery schedules. As part of the mandate of Gaganyaan, two uncrewed flights are planned to test the end-to-end capacity for the manned mission. Officials of the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency said the first and second waves of the pandemic have “severely affected” the Gaganyaan programme. Hardware elements for the mission are fabricated by the industry, and lockdowns in different parts of the country at different period have adversely impacted delivery schedules. “Design, analysis and documentation are done by ISRO while hardware for Gaganyaan is fabricated and supplied by hundreds of industries across the country”, an ISRO official told PTI. The objective of the Gaganyaan programme is to demonstrate the capability...

India’s road transport ministry issues draft notification for ethanol blending in petrol

Comments have been invited from stakeholders within a period of 30 days. "The newly manufactured gasoline vehicles fitted with spark ignition engine compatible to run on ethanol gasoline blends of E-12 and E-15 shall be type approved as per prevailing gasoline emission norms," the draft notification said. Recently, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had said the government will take a decision over flex-fuel engines, as it is considering making these mandatory for the automobile industry. "I am going to issue an order to the industry that only petrol engines will not be there, there will be flex-fuel engines, where there will be choice for the people that they can use 100 percent crude oil or 10...

Tata Altroz Dark Edition, Nexon Dark Edition spied ahead of early July launch

Image
Following encouraging response for the Dark Edition of the Tata Harrier, Tata is expanding its Dark Edition line-up by rolling out stealthier versions of the Altroz and the Nexon. Both the Tata Altroz Dark Edition and Nexon Dark Edition, as the suffix suggests, come with black exterior paint and black alloy wheels. Talking of the Tata Altroz first, it has a blacked-out finish for the grille and the lower bumper. Just like the Tata Harrier, it gets the 'Dark' badging on the front fenders and the Altroz insignia is also finished in black. The alloy wheels are the same design as on the regular Altroz, but finished in black with the Dark Edition. On the inside, the Altroz Dark Edition gets a blacked-out dashboard with gloss-black trim on the dash. The door pads are also blacked-out and black leatherette seats are carried over from the top-end trims. The changes are similar in the case of the Tata Nexon Dark Edition as well. Along with the all-black colour scheme, it gets grey be...

German COVID-19 vaccine CureVac has efficacy rate of 48 percent in final trials

Germany's CureVac said Wednesday that final trial results showed its coronavirus vaccine had an efficacy rate of just 48 percent, far lower than those developed by mRNA rivals BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna. The outcome had been expected after poor interim data were released earlier this month. The company in part blamed "the unprecedented context of 15 strains circulating" among the trial volunteers, as well as varying responses across age groups. The Covid vaccines developed by Germany's BioNTech in partnership with US giant Pfizer and by US firm Moderna -- based on the same novel messenger RNA technology -- were approved earlier on in the pandemic after showing around 95 percent efficacy. Their trials only had to contend with the original strain of the virus. But recent studies indicate that both vaccines also offer strong protection against the newer, more contagious variants. CureVac said its jab, known as CVnCoV, did slightly better among people aged 18 to 60 ...

Canada declares only zero-emission vehicles will be sold in the country by 2035

Image
All new cars and light-duty trucks in Canada will be required to be zero-emissions by 2035, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced, moving up the timeline for eliminating vehicle pollution. "Today, I'm announcing that we are accelerating our zero emission vehicles goal. By 2035, all new cars and light duty trucks sold in Canada will be zero emission vehicles - 100 percent of them," Alghabra told a news conference. "This is five years sooner than our previous goal," he said. The regulatory move, he said, will help Canada meet its overall net-zero carbon emissions target for the economy by mid-century. Alghabra noted that his country is one of the few in the world with domestic access to all of the key resources for producing electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and praised General Motors, Ford and other automakers for opening EV assembly plants in Canada. But despite government incentives to defray the relatively higher prices of EVs, purchases have been slow...

China first country to be given malaria free certification by the WHO

Image
The World Health Organization (WHO) has awarded China with a malaria-free certification. According to the WHO website, the status has been achieved after 70 years of effort. While in the 1940s, there used to be 30 million cases of the disease annually, today the country is free from malaria. In over three decades, China has also become the first country to be awarded a malaria-free certification in the WHO Western Pacific Region. Previously, WHO had awarded this certification to Australia in 1981, Singapore in 1982 and Brunei Darussalam in 1987. All over the world, WHO has given as many as 40 countries and territories a malaria-free certification. In 2021, El Salvador received the certification while Algeria and Argentina received it in 2019. In 2018, Paraguay and Uzbekistan received malaria-free certification. As per the WHO website , in the 1950s, preventive antimalarial medicines were given to those people who were identified at the risk of being infected with malaria. Insectic...

Aiwa AT-X80FANC TWS buds, Aiwa ESBT-460 quad-driver wireless neckband review snapshots

Image
The brand Aiwa makes me nostalgic. Some of you may not be old enough to feel the same way, but back in the day, Aiwa used to be a dominant player in the audio segment. Incidentally, my first portable cassette player, colloquially known as the Walkman back then (sorry, Sony), was made by Aiwa. They had some high-quality earphones, too. Then the brand went missing from India for a long time. Now, it seems to be back, and it’s looking to regain lost ground with a handful of interesting products. We will be taking a close look at a couple of its products – the first being TWS buds with active noise cancellation (ANC), and the other, a dual-driver wireless neckband. Let’s see if the company can make a dent in the highly crowded and equally competitive wireless earphones market in India. Aiwa AT-X80FANC TWS buds review Aiwa launched the AT-X80FANC true wireless earbuds in India at Rs 7,999, and our bar of expectations was set accordingly. But for a pair going almost Rs 8,000, the feature...

UK offers jabs to COP26 participants who haven't been vaccinated against COVID-19 yet

The COP26 climate summit will offer Covid-19 jabs to participants unable to be vaccinated before the crunch November talks, the United Nations said Tuesday as registration opened. In May, COP26 president Alok Sharma said host Britain intended to go forward with an in-person format for the biggest climate talks since the 2015 Paris deal, countering speculation it could be held virtually. The announcement launching sign-ups said the timing four months before the start date would allow attendees to get vaccinated first. "The UK COP Presidency... is offering vaccines for those registered parties, admitted observers and media representatives who have not yet received a vaccine, are not able to get one in time for the attendance at COP26 and cannot access a vaccine through other means," it said. A page dedicated to information on jabs for COP26 attendees said the doses are provided by the UK government and are meant for people living in countries where shots are less accessible...

Facebook debuts a newsletter subscription service called Bulletin for independent writers

Facebook debuted a newsletter subscription service Tuesday, an attempt to court influential writers to its platform as more creators branch out from traditional publications and go independent. To jump-start the service, called Bulletin, Facebook spent months recruiting dozens of writers across different categories — including sports, entertainment, science and health — paying them upfront to bring their readers to Facebook’s platform. The writers include New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell, author Mitch Albom and organizational psychologist Adam Grant. Facebook plans to expand the program and partner with more writers over time, including those who focus on local news. “The goal here is to support millions of people doing creative work,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a conference call with reporters. “More and more independent writers are discovering ways to use their voice and make money through other avenues, similar to the ones we’re introducing here.” Those who are part ...

Venus doesn't have enough water in its atmosphere to support active life, say scientists

Image
A study measuring water concentration in Venus's atmosphere concluded Monday that life as we know it is not possible among the sulphuric acid droplets that make up the planet's famously cloudy skies. The search for life on our nearest neighbour has so far proved fruitless, although a 2020 paper rekindled hopes for Venus when it claimed to have detected phosphine gas -- known to be produced by bacteria on Earth -- in the planet's clouds. The authors have since called their own findings into question. But the claim inspired scientists led by Queen's University Belfast to test the theory from a different angle: whether there is enough water in Venus's atmosphere to make life possible. In 2017, microbiologist John Hallsworth discovered a terrestrial fungus that can survive at 58.5 percent relative humidity -- the driest conditions at which biological activity has ever been measured. "We bent over backwards to argue that the most extreme, tolerant microbes on ...

Delayed AstraZeneca doses will boost immunity, not compromise it: Study

Delayed second and third doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine boost immunity against Covid-19, a study by Oxford University, which developed the jab with the British-Swedish firm, said on Monday. An interval of up to 45 weeks between the first and second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine led to an enhanced immune response, rather than compromising immunity, the study said. Giving a third dose of the jab more than six months after the second dose also leads to a "substantial increase" in antibodies and induces a "strong boost" to subjects' immune response, said the pre-print study, meaning that it has yet to be peer-reviewed. "This should come as reassuring news to countries with lower supplies of the vaccine, who may be concerned about delays in providing second doses to their populations," said lead investigator of the Oxford trial Andrew Pollard. "There is an excellent response to a second dose, even after a 10-month delay from the first." T...

'Dragon Man' skull discovery in China may change our understanding of human evolution

Image
Scientists on Friday announced that a massive fossilized skull that is at least 140,000 years old is a new species of ancient human, a finding that could potentially change prevailing views of how — and even where — our species, Homo sapiens, evolved. The skull belonged to a mature male who had a huge brain, massive brow ridges, deep set eyes and a bulbous nose. It had remained hidden in an abandoned well for 85 years, after a laborer came across it at a construction site in China. The researchers named the new species Homo longi and gave it the nickname “Dragon Man,” for the Dragon River region of northeast China where the skull was discovered. The team said that Homo longi, and not the Neanderthals, was the extinct human species mostly closely related to our own. If confirmed, that would change how scientists envision the origin of Homo sapiens, which has been built up over the years from fossil discoveries and the analysis of ancient DNA. But a number of experts disputed this c...
