Reduced levels of air pollution has dramatically positive effects on people's health

Image
Air pollution is an issue that requires urgent redressal if environmental degradation is to be halted from progressing further. Though, on an individual scale, reduction in air pollution has been observed to have dramatic positive effects on the health of people. The study 'Health Benefits of Air Pollution Reduction' published in the American Thoracic Society's journal Annals of the American Thoracic Society , by the Environmental Committee of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS), has reviewed interventions that have reduced air pollution at its source. The lead author of the study Dr Dean Schraufnagel, MD, ATSF, said: "We knew there were benefits from pollution control, but the magnitude and relatively short time duration to accomplish them was impressive." "Our findings indicate almost immediate and substantial effects on health outcomes followed by reduced exposure to air pollution. It's critical that governments adopt and enforc...

From rejection to the bourses: How Jaspreet Singh is readying his SaaS startup Druva for an IPO

Image
It took Druva — the software-as-a-services (SaaS) company — more than a decade to enter the coveted unicorn club or startups valued at over a billion dollars. Its co-founder and CEO, Jaspreet Singh, who barely enjoyed his company’s unicorn status, is readying Druva for an initial public offer (IPO), most likely in the US. Singh, a man who likes things to be simple and straightforward, doesn’t let the unicorn status get to his head, though he does agree that it’s a good validation of the efforts that go into building a business. “(Unicorn) is an overhyped term,” says Singh, as he sips his Masala Tea in the Capital Kitchen restaurant at Taj Palace in Delhi. “The customer doesn’t care, the shareholders don’t care. The two people who matter don’t care…Customers care about value and shareholders on the outcome.” Then why this euphoria among startups to become unicorns. “The Bay area is the Hollywood for geeks. They are competing for press (coverage) and the press enjoys it,” said Sing...

Novel smart skin changes colour when it comes in contact with heat can help in camouflage

Image
After conducting research on smart skins of animals like chameleons, researchers develop a flexible smart skin that changes its colour when comes in contact with sunlight and heat. The study was published in the journal ACS Nano . The hues of chameleon skin rely not on dyes or pigments as most colours do but instead on arrays of tiny structures known as photonic crystals. Light reflects from these microscopic surfaces and interferes with other beams of reflected light, producing a colour. The hue changes when the distance between photonic crystals varies — for example when a chameleon tenses or relaxes its skin. To mimic these natural abilities, scientists have embedded photonic crystals inflexible materials such as hydrogels and changed their colours by contracting or expanding the material like an accordion. However, these large fluctuations in size can strain the materials and cause them to buckle. Khalid Salaita and colleagues wanted to take a closer look at chameleon skin...

Protein that encourages growth of bowel cancer in human beings identified

Image
Researchers have identified a key protein that supports the growth of many bowel cancers, an advance that may lead to new therapies against the malignant disease. The study, published in the Journal of Cell Biology , revealed that a protein called Importin-11 transported the cancer-causing protein Beta-catenin into the nucleus of bowel cancer cells, where it can drive cell proliferation. According to the scientists, including those from the University of Toronto in Canada, inhibiting this transport step could block the growth of most of such cancers caused by elevated Beta-catenin levels. They said about 80 percent of these cancers are associated with mutations in a gene called APC which result in elevated levels of the Beta-catenin protein. High levels of this protein are followed by its accumulation in the cell nucleus, where it can activate numerous genes behind cell proliferation. The scientists added that the protein also promotes the growth and maintenance of tumours in the...

NASA astronaut Christina Koch sets record for longest spaceflight by a woman till date

Image
A US astronaut set a record Saturday for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, breaking the old mark of 288 days with about two months left in her mission. Christina Koch, a 40-year-old electrical engineer from Livingston, Montana, arrived at the International Space Station on March 14. She broke the record set by former space station commander Peggy Whitson in 2016-2017. Koch is expected to spend a total of 328 days, or nearly 11 months, onboard the space station before returning to Earth. Missions are typically six months, but NASA announced in April that it was extending her mission until February. The US record for the longest space flight is 340 days set by Scott Kelly in 2015-2016. The world record is 15 months set in the 1990s by a Russian cosmonaut aboard the former Mir space station. Koch’s extended mission will help NASA learn about the effects of long spaceflights, data that NASA officials have said is needed to support future deep space exploration missions to t...

India Science Festival 2020 promises AI-art, levitating objects with your brain, interactions with international scientists

Image
Year after year, we see sports, literature, startups, politics, business and religion take centre stage in the news, on television and on social media. Science, however, is limited to the confines of universities, companies and academia in India. Rarely does science and scientific endeavour get the centre-stage attention. Those keen to know more about the latest and greatest happenings under the broad umbrella of science, are having to seek them out, through digital resources, old-school conferences and seminars. Rarely has science ever been seen as the relatable, engaging and universally-binding language that it is. India and its youth are engaging in science in schools because they're obligated to – little engagement follows once their education is behind them. Many of us are unfamiliar with how science happens, why it's even necessary or the advances made by brilliant Indian scientists who have put India on the world map. The I...

Wikimedia Foundation says India’s proposed intermediary liability rules limits free expression online

The Wikimedia Foundation has raised concerns about India’s proposed intermediary liability rules that overlook how websites with Indian users have to host content on their platforms. It requires websites or services with more than five million users in India to set up a local office and employ a senior executive to represent the company during legal issues. It has written a lengthy letter to Electronics and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad addressing the concerns and risks that the new intermediary rules could have on websites and ultimately on open and free expression on the internet. The proposed rules will place a financial burden on not only Wikimedia but other foreign websites and services operating in India. The letter talked about how it develops a material burden on the foundation’s non-pro...
