NASA will debut AI system on Mars rovers to direct the search for life on the Red planet and beyond

Image
NASA has stepped closer to allowing remote onboard computers to direct the search for life on other planets. Scientists from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) have announced first results from new intelligent systems, to be installed in space probes, capable of identifying geochemical signatures of life from rock samples. Allowing these intelligent systems to choose both what to analyse and what to tell us back on Earth will overcome severe limits on how information is transmitted over huge distances in the search for life from distant planets. The systems will debut on the 2022/23 ExoMars mission, before fuller implementation on more distant bodies in the solar system. ESA’s ExoMars rover (foreground) and Russia’s stationary surface science platform (background) are scheduled for launch in July 2020, arriving at Mars in March 2021. The Trace Gas Orbiter, which has been at Mars since October 2016, will act as awill act as a relay station for the mission, as well as conduct...

Google-Apple's COVID-19 exposure notification rolls out for users in India, not compatible with Aarogya Setu yet

Image
Back in April, Google and Apple teamed up to launch a COVID -19 contract tracing technology and named it Exposure Notifications. Turns out, it is finally available for both Android and iOS users in India. Notably, users are required to download their public health authority's app, which is Aarogya Setu in our case, to use the Exposure notifications. However, the Aarogya Setu app is not yet compatible with Google's exposure notifications. There are a few tweaks and requirements that Aarogya Setu needs to fulfill so that it is compatible with Google's API. Google is stringent to the fact that its API will only work with the public health authority apps. (Also read: Apple-Google contract tracing API promises privacy protection, yet many govts want their own apps )  Representational image: Tech2 Countries like Switzerland , Austria, Germany, and others are already using this API. If Aarogya Setu becomes compatible with exposure notification, here is all you would l...

Astronomers discover two super-Earth exoplanets, orbiting a star, 11 light-years away

Image
Astronomers have discovered two super-Earth exoplanets that are orbiting a star 11 light-years away from Earth. The results of the study were published in the journal Science . According to a report in CNN , the star, Gliese 887 is a small, dim red dwarf star with about half the mass of our sun, But due to its proximity, it is the brightest red dwarf in the sky and is one of the closest stars to our sun. The report added that a group of astronomers working on the Red Dots project observed the star using the European Southern Observatory in Chile for three months. The High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, known as the HARPS spectrograph, detected two planets around Gliese 887. As per a report in SciTech Daily , researchers made use of the 'Doppler wobble' effect. The method enabled researchers to measure the tiny back and forth wobbles of the star caused by the gravitational pull of the planets. Study authors said that the regular signals correspond to orbits of 9...

Astronomers observe light flare emerge from the collision of two black holes for the first time

Image
The collision between two black holes is known to send ripples in space and time but is not known to emit light – till now. Astronomers have now revealed that they saw a flare of light coming out when two black holes rapidly spun around each other before making a violent union. The astronomers claim that this is the first time they have seen a merger of black holes giving off light. A new study published in the journal  Physical Review Letters   says that the black holes may have just been in the right place at the right time because of which the researchers observed a flare of light. The research has been conducted by a team of scientists from Graduate Center, CUNY, Caltech’s Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), reported  SciTech Daily . When the celestial dance took place, the black holes were located inside a giant disc of gas and dust. What happened was that their merger ...

Facebook says it will now label newsworthy content, activists argue 'new changes don't go nearly far enough'

Image
Last week, Facebook announced that it will start labeling newsworthy content that violates the social media company's policies, and label all posts and ads about voting with links to authoritative information, including those from politicians. A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed Reuters  that its new policy would have meant attaching a link on voting information to US President Donald Trump's post last month about mail-in ballots. Rival Twitter had affixed a fact-checking label to that post. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a live-streamed company townhall that Facebook would also ban ads that claim people from groups based on race, religion, sexual orientation or immigration status are a threat to physical safety or health. The policy changes come during a growing ad boycott campaign, called " Stop Hate for Profit ," that was started by several US civil rights groups after the death of George Floyd, to pressure the company to act on hate speech and misinf...

NASA announces ‘Lunar Loo Challenge’ to come up with best space toilet for its future lander

Image
While space exploration is pretty amazing, one thing which seems to be bothering NASA when they send astronauts back to the moon is where will they go for bathroom breaks on reaching the lunar surface. National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA has announced the "Lunar Loo Challenge" to come up with the best space toilet for the agency's future human lander. According to a NASA statement , "While astronauts are in the cabin and out of their spacesuits, they will need a toilet that has all the same capabilities as ones here on Earth." NASA has subsequently called on the global community for their "novel design concepts for compact toilets that can operate in both microgravity and lunar gravity." As per a report in The Verge , NASA's Artemis programme, which aims to send the first woman and next man to Moon by 2024, needs to have a restroom that is versatile. According to the report, the restroom needs to work in orbit and also when ...

AYUSH Ministry is endangering people, jeopardising Ayurveda with feeble responses to Patanjali's Coronil stunt and COVID-19

Image
After a public launch of an alleged “cure” for COVID-19, Patanjali Ayurved’s marketing stunt with ‘Coronil’ has effectively backfired. The news was met with harsh criticism on social media, dragged through the dirt on Twitter within minutes of making headlines. Hours later and well after the controversy had erupted, the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) responded to the news with a stern statement , urging that Patanjali stop advertising their product till its claims were verified by the ministry, and the product given approval. Scientists reverse Parkinson’s disease in mice by tweaking the genetic code of non-neuronal brain cells

Image
Scientists are developing a one-off treatment that appears to permanently cure Parkinson's disease in mice. The results of the study, conducted by researchers from the University of California, were published in the scientific journal Nature . According to study authors, they hope that the same approach can be used to treat a wide range of neurodegenerative conditions in human beings. According to a report in IFL Science , Parkinson's and other types of dementia occur when neurons become damaged and die. Scientists have spent decades trying to come up with treatments to protect the brain cells or generate new ones to replace the ones that are lost. Study authors have now been able to achieve this by altering a single gene. The report mentions that researchers tweaked the genetic code of non-neuronal brain cells called astrocytes in petri dish. The astrocytes facilitate communication throughout the brain by producing a protein called PTB which ensures that they do not trans...

UV light is an efficient way to deactivate the COVID-19 causing SARS-CoV-2 virus, reducing transmission

Image
Using ultraviolet (UV) light to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus may be an efficient, easily deployable, and economically affordable method to reduce COVID-19 transmission in indoor spaces, according to a study. The study, published in the journal ACS Nano , analysed the currently available UV-C sources, such as fluorescent lamps, microcavity plasmas, and LEDs. It noted that by irradiating this type of light inside the ventilation systems of buildings and in shared indoor spaces while not in use, it is possible to quickly and efficiently deactivate airborne and surface-deposited SARS-CoV-2 viruses that cause COVID-19. The researchers, including those from CFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences in Spain, also explored costs and investments in deploying such technology. They explained that a global capital investment of a few billion dollars in UV-C sources could protect indoor workers worldwide. A long series of studies suggest that virus transmission in indoor spaces has a much ...
